Hello!

This page was created for my practicum class and will hold activities I have created for them and their SEL journey.

Self-Awareness...
April 22nd

Self-awareness is your ability to recognize your own emotions, thoughts and behaviours, and why you might be doing those behaviours.

For your first challenge, I ask you to create an avatar for yourself that represents who YOU are.

Step One: Go to the link below and do some of the quizzes to see what kind of characteristics you have, what super power you would have, what planet you would be and more. Complete 3 or more of them and jot down your answers, and other important qualities of yourself that you can think of.

Step Two: Create your avatar! you can create this however you would like, with pencil, crayons, or on a digital platform! Here are some links you can use to create a digital avatar.

I decided to challenge myself and try using a digital platform and here is what I came up with! I know that I am creative and athletic since I love playing sports and making art. I also know that I am a good linstener and very caring because I always want to help my friends when they're having a hard time. I am trustworthy and funny because I'll never let my friends down and they can always count on me for a good laugh. I can get upset when something continues to go badly, but if I remind myself  how amazing the end result will be I can work hard till the end. If I had a superpower it would be super strength! If I was an explorer, I would be an Oceanographer! And if I was a dinosaur, I would be a Spinosaurus!

This here is my avatar! Took me a couple times but I pushed through my frustration and created something I love. My final product is the bright blue and purple one. I choose this because I think it's silly, bright and adventurous like me!

Self-Awareness...Strengths!
April 29th

Here is what I created! Can you guess what three strengths I chose to express?

Step One: What are your strengths? Check out the list of "Strengths" in the SEL file found in the "files" section of teams. Read through the list and the definitions and write down at least 3 strengths that you have.

Step Two: Write down the definitions to those strengths in your own words with a detailed example. This example should be something you've done that supports the strength you have chosen. For example, a strength of mine is flexibility. When I am presented with a sudden change in my life I can easily adapt to the new situation and adjust comfortably. A real life example of mine might be changing from teaching in the classroom to teaching online, I have stayed cool as a cucumber!

Step Three: Create a story with your avatar that requires you to use your strengths (3)! This story can be presented in writing, comic book style, series of pictures, audio recording, video or however you want to present it.

Self-Management...Zones of Regulation Documentation
May 6th

"Self-management: The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals."

Step One:

Step Two:

    • For the next TWO weeks, you will do a continuous project that will track your emotions, how you are feeling, and your zones of regulation. Everyday you will check in with how you are feeling and what zone of regulation you are in, much like how we check our temperatures in morning meetings.

    • You will compile these "check ins" or "entries" into a creative piece that will show an expression of how you have been feeling over the next two weeks. How you do your entries and express them is up to you and depends on what resources you have at home.

Self-Management...Strategies
May 13th

Step One:

    • Class brainstorm: We will have a class discussion during our Wednesday meeting to think about ways we can manage our emotions and behaviours.

Step Two:

    • Video: We will watch a video containing characters

showing different emotions and behaviours. As a class,

you will work together to think of ways that character

could self-regulate and get back to the green zone.

Step Three:

    • Assignment: As you take note of your zones of regulation throughout the week, write down different strategies you USED to help you regulate those feelings.

      • Write out FOUR examples that you use to self-manage giving lots of details (what zone you were in, why you were in that zone, how did you attempt to regulate, did it work or not, etc.).

Social Awareness...Empathy Project
May 20th

Class Lesson:

  • First show the class a video that will spark conversation and empathetic discussions. I chose 'Life on Victor Street', a video about an Indigenous boy living in Winnipeg surrounded by gang violence and discrimination. I have created a script,  found in the attachment, that goes through the first 10 minute

Step One:

    • Choose an individuals story and watch/read about the person and their life. First, write a small blurb about what you think of them by just knowing their name and what they look like (first impression). Here are a couple suggestions, click for the link,  but feel free to find someone else! If you choose to do so, send Ms. Loiselle a message telling her who you have picked.

Step Two:

    • Empathy Project Part 1:

      • With your chosen story from step one, reflect upon how their life is different or the same as your own life. Reflect upon how it must feel to live their life. Below are some examples and some options but feel free to choose your own person.

      • Learn as much as you can about this person. Write your notes in teams so we can follow along with you.

      • INCLUDE YOUR SOURCE.

      • Start to create project/presentation that tells us what you have learnt about this person. What has happened to them? What have they done? What is it like to live their life? What emotions does their story provoke?

        • This  is open to your choice of presentation. For example, you could do a power point, create a piece of art, make a video, write a song, make a poster...etc.

Responsible Decision Making
Screen Shot 2020-06-09 at 1.21.09 PM.png

This subject matter was approached as a class activity and discussion. There was no at home activity or assignment to go along with this lesson to give students the time to finish their empathy project.

Warm-Up: Moral Delima and class temperature.

Step One:

Step Two:

For your final project you will be creating something (of your choice) that you would give to a future grade 6/7 student. Like a time capsule or a letter, the purpose of this project is to use your SEL wisdom and your experience during COVID to help future students cope, should a pandemic ever happen again. What would future grade 6/7 students need to know? What SEL skills should they have and why? How can they care for their mental health and well-being? Once again this project can be done in any format you would like! Make sure to read the criteria and do your absolute best!

Criteria:

  • Includes three elements of SEL.

  • Draws upon what we have learnt together.

  • Addresses future students in a pandemic.

  • Shows thoughtfulness and has connected ideas.

  • Project choice aligns with meaning of chosen content.

This is embedded within the Responsible Decision Making document.
